What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise method dedicated to improving physical and mental health. It teaches good posture and improves flexibility and agility.

It can help alleviate back pain. The aim of the exercises is to strengthen core muscles therefore improving stability, balance and body awareness. Pilates is fluid and low impact exercise, which increases sleekness and flexibility, rather than adding muscle bulk.

About our Pilates Classes

Pilates instructors at Chipping Norton Physio are all fully trained physiotherapists with many years experience of working within the healthcare profession.

This means we use our knowledge and experience of physiotherapy when teaching the principles of pilates to ensure you exercise safely and effectively.

The group classes are kept small to ensure we can keep an eye on everyone in the session and correct posture and alignment to help to gain maximum benefit from the class.

The classes we run are mainly mat work classes with the occasional use of small equipment such as resistance bands or prickly balls. Most of our classes are designed to be suitable for all ages and abilities – the only prerequisite is that you can get on and off the floor!

We also offer advanced classes and these are only suitable for those that have attended pilates previously and worked to at least an intermediate level. For new clients, an introductory session is a pre-requisite before being able to join the advanced sessions.

Neuro Pilates Classes

It can be challenging to find an effective way to exercise after a neurological event. Our Neuro Pilates Classes are taught by specialist neurologicial physiotherapists with many years experience of working within this field.

Pilates has been shown to aid relaxtion, improve balance, co-ordination and strength as well as loosen stiff joints and muscles. Clients recovering from a neurological event have reports improvements in posture, walking and the ability to use the arms.

Our Neuro Pilates Classes have a maximum of 8 people per classes and they are tailored to suit each individual’s needs. There is focus on progression into functional movement.

Each participant will need to complete a pilates assessment and tutorial with the instructor prior to starting the sessions. This allows the therapist to identify goals, health issues, postural and functional movement adaptations and to diagnose any injuries. During this assessment the physiotherapist will talk you through the fundamentals of pilates and how to correctly engage the core stability muscles, set your posture and tune into breathing techniques, which will all help you to get the most out of the Neuro Pilates classes.

Please Note new clients wishing to attend this class will need to be able to sit unsupported in a chair with a backrest OR be able to get on and off the floor either independently or with a little assistance from the therapist.

All of the pilates classes listed above are run as a course, usually in 6-week blocks, during school term times. They are open to all ages and ability levels apart from the specialist Mummy & Baby class, which is a post-natal class for new mothers and their baby aged 2-8 months.
